Overview
When working in IKE PoleForeman, you may encounter a situation where a conductor you need is either unavailable in the conductor list or the Ruling Span field is greyed out and cannot be selected. This is commonly caused by an Operating Company (OpCo) mismatch — the conductor exists in your organization's database, but it is saved under a different OpCo than the one you are currently working in.
What Is an Operating Company (OpCo)?
Large utility organizations often divide their operations into multiple subsidiary entities called Operating Companies (OpCos). Each OpCo typically corresponds to a specific geographic region or service territory. In IKE PoleForeman, the database is structured so that conductors, load cases, and other configuration items can be limited to a specific OpCo. As a result, a conductor that exists under one OpCo may not be visible or selectable when you are working in a different OpCo.
Symptoms
- A conductor (e.g., 795 AAC) appears to have disappeared from a project or cannot be found in the list.
- The Ruling Span field is greyed out and cannot be selected after choosing a conductor.
- You can select a conductor and ruling span in a newly created file but not in an existing file.
- The issue is specific to the OpCo you are currently working in, but the conductor is available in another OpCo within the same organization's database.
Root Cause
The Ruling Span is directly tied to Sag and Tension values configured in the database. If those values are missing or incomplete for a particular load case scenario within your current OpCo, the Ruling Span will be greyed out. Additionally, when an organization creates multiple OpCos, conductors and their associated data are not automatically shared across all OpCos — they must be individually configured or duplicated in each OpCo's database settings.
This is a user/database configuration issue, not a software defect in IKE PoleForeman.
Resolution
-
Confirm the OpCo you are working in
- Verify which Operating Company is associated with your current project or work order.
-
Check if the conductor exists in another OpCo
- Log into the IKE PoleForeman Database Admin Portal and review whether the conductor is configured under a different OpCo.
-
Contact your internal Database Administrator
- Reach out to the person in your organization who has Administrator access to the IKE PoleForeman Database portal. They will be able to add the missing conductor to the correct OpCo, add or complete the Sag and Tension values for the applicable load case scenarios, and create and publish a new database version so users can receive the update.
-
Update your local database
- Once your Database Administrator has published the changes, update your local copy by going to Help > Check for Database Updates in IKE PoleForeman, or simply log out and log back in (the update applies automatically on next login).
For Database Administrators
If you are a Database Administrator and need to add Sag and Tension data or configure conductors for an OpCo, follow these steps:
- Log into the IKE PoleForeman Database Admin Portal.
- Navigate to the appropriate OpCo where the conductor needs to be added or updated.
- Locate the conductor and add or complete the Sag and Tension values for all relevant load case scenarios.
- Go to the Versions tab and click Create New From Current to save all changes as a new database version.
- Make the new version Current so users in the field receive the updated data on their next login or manual check for updates.
